About the Artist
Personal Statement In a world where much of what occupies our minds distracts us from seeing the present moment I seek to redefine the narrative of our existence by focusing on what's right in front of us, what's happening in this instant, the now. Making photographs, for me, is documenting that moment of awareness. I consider my work documentary, but not in the traditional sense. It's not event-driven or subject-specific; there's no agenda, no point to make. Instead, my photographs are evidence of me engaging with the reality of what I see. I become hyper-aware of what's in front of me. The atmosphere becomes tangible; it swirls around me like water. It's during these moments that I feel most directly connected to the world. I manipulate my medium to heighten that sense of connection to the present. I work to make the viewer stay with each image and investigate these documents of the moments I witness. Artifacts from the real world. What the memory of being there looks like. Biography After receiving his Master of Fine Arts degree from George Washington University in 1982, Rick McCleary embarked on a 30 year career creating photographic images for corporate and advertising clients nationally. He's had numerous gallery shows of his art work and is represented in numerous private collections. When asked when he's going to retire, he laughs and says, "Never. Art is for life.
