About the Artist
"Pursue what you love, love what you pursue."

Catherine
Hillis has painted all her life, studying privately
throughout the last two decades, winning numerous awards
and honors at competitive shows regionally and
nationally.
Mrs. Hillis primarily paints in watercolors,
including busy street scenes, intricate florals, and her
favorite, the historic sites near her home on the Blue
Ridge in Northern Virginia. The hallmarks of her work
are rich color and a touch of humor. She frequently
paints abroad, most recently in Europe and Asia. She
was selected to be resident artist in Dinan, France
during 2007 by “Les Grande Amis de la Vignes” and she
was invited to paint in Monet’s Garden for two days
during the summer.
Mrs. Hillis’ work
is currently represented by the Benjamin Gallery in
Hagerstown, MD, the Thames Gallery in Frederick, MD,
Pennello Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio and Round Hill
Arts Center in Round Hill, VA. She teaches sought
after watercolor classes at her studio in historic
Purceville, VA at 107 E. Main Street, #4D.
and teaches workshops throughout the region. Her
paintings have been purchased by collectors
throughout the United States and as far away as
Russia and Japan. During the summer of 2007, Mrs.
Hillis painted in and around Dinan, France, having
been awarded a grant and status as resident artist
A painting by Ms. Hillis’ was selected for the book
“Best of American Watercolorists, 2007” and she garnered
second place in watercolors for the state of Virginia in
2005, her work being published in the book, “Best of
Virginia Artists and Artisans, 2005;” her biography is
included in “Who’s Who Among American Women, 2006, 2007and
2008.” Four of her paintings were selected as the cover
art for the national journal of the American Speech,
Language and Hearing Association and, in September of
2006, her article “Ten Tools for Better Watercolors” was
published in American Artist Magazine (www.myamericanartist.com).
She is a signature member of the Southern Watercolor
Society, the Virginia Watercolor Society, the Potomac
Valley Watercolor Society and the Baltimore Watercolor
Society and an associate of the National Watercolor
Society.

Offering on
tour:
You will find items in every price range in Catherine
Hillis' studio: from note cards, to prints, to original
paintings. The artist will have on hand landscapes of
the local historic scenery as well as large scale
cityscapes and intricate florals in glass. Mrs. Hillis
will be demonstrating watercolor painting and discussing
technique during both Saturday and Sunday. There are
five restaurants as well as coffee shops and retail
shopping available within walking distance of the
artist's downtown studio. Refreshments will be available
all day.

Main Street (near the 21st Street
intersection) located between the Toy Store and the
Dollar Store; enter through the glass door between
the two stores and go upstairs to Catherine Hillis
