Artist's Statement
I remember the first time a painting made me cry. I was strolling the streets of a small town when my eyes laid upon a painting in the window of an art gallery. I was touched so deeply by the beauty, mystery, and nostalgia that I gasped and my eyes filled with tears. I have been moved by poetry and music to tears, but I had no idea that a piece of visual art could do that. Since that time I have studied and strived to create beauty and to invoke mood in my own work.
I consider myself a nature painter, although I also occasionally paint still life. My favorite subjects are birds, animals, and the sea. I work from photographs as well as life, and I practice painting en plein air. I work in several mediums, but my primary medium is soft pastel. I love painting, because it gives me time to immerse myself in my favorite places, with my favorite beings.
